Radiation Protection
Protection Against Sun Radiation
The sun has many benefits, yet it’s also the leading cause of premature skin aging.
The depletion of the ozone layer allows for the penetration of sun radiation at an intensifying rate, which increases sun-related dangers.
Exposure to UV radiation is considered today as one of the main culprits of skin cancer.
Since the intensity of sun radiation increases over time, the rate of all forms of skin cancer increases accordingly each year.
The need for UV radiation protection has become more significant and crucial, especially in a sun-rich country like Israel, where high levels of radiation are measured 8-9 months out of the entire year.
The Skin Gard sun care and protection products employ advanced, groundbreaking formulas, which conform to Australian standards, the most stringent in the world.
What are the dangers involved in prolonged, unprotected sun exposure?
Sun radiation penetrates the different layers of the skin, causing redness, blisters and skin burns.
These eventually disappear but their effects accumulate throughout our lifetime.
Extended sun exposure harms the genetic material of the skin cells and increases the chance of getting skin cancer, mainly melanoma, the most dangerous type.
The sun further accelerates skin aging, dryness and wrinkles.
UV rays
UV rays are detrimental to our skin and our health! UVB rays produce heat.
They penetrate the top layer of the skin, creating redness and skin burns.
Sunscreen (SPF) provides protection only against UVB rays.
UVA rays do not generate heat but they deeply permeate the skin, causing long term damage, including wrinkles, spots, premature skin aging, they even harm the DNA of skin cells and may lead to skin cancer.
Over 90% of UV rays that reach the earth are of the UVA type.
What is a suntan?
A suntan is the skin’s way of protecting itself against harmful sun radiation.
The skin’s defense system activates an enzyme known as tyrosine, which is in charge of stimulating the cells that produce melanin.
Melanin is responsible for creating a tanned skin tone.
Does everyone tan?
No. Due to evolutionary adaptation, extremely dark skinned individuals do not tan since their skin is already rich with melanin, which prevents the penetration of the sun’s rays into the skin.
In contrast, extremely light skin is unable to produce melanin and so it does not tan in the sun, it burns.
SPF sun protection
The level of SPF determines the duration of the effective protection of sunscreen against sun burns, caused by radiation, compared with the time it would take the skin to redden without protection.
For example: if redness appears on the skin after 10 minutes of unprotected sun exposure, then with SPF 15, redness would appear after 150 minutes (10 minutes x 15).
What are sun filters?
Sun filters filter sun rays that permeate the skin by taking-in the rays or by reflecting them back from the skin to the atmosphere.
The chemical filters absorb the sun radiation and it remains on the skin.
The physical filters operate via the “mirror effect” principle, reflecting the rays back to the sun.
Skin Gard products have the optimal combination of chemical and physical filters.
When is the best time to apply sunscreen?
Sunscreen absorbs into the skin only 20-30 minutes after it’s applied, which is why it’s advisable to apply it before going out in the sun.
Always be sure to apply a generous and uniform layer of sunscreen and then to reapply every two hours.
In cases of perspiration, of going into the water and/or towel drying, it is recommended to apply again.
